"For a few short years in the beginning of the '70s, however, Z/28s still offered serious high performance and wrapped it up in an attractive European-inspired package with chrome bumpers, smooth coupe bodywork, and an enormous square grille." Hagerty In the hands of Mark Donohue on the TransAm circuits, the late-60s Z28s established the model as a race-bred Mustang challenger, the early 70s saw the Z28 become more livable. As the Hagerty people put it, the "good stuff" was still there: "The Z/28 package still came with heavy duty suspension and Positraction axle." And of those 70s-era Z28 cars, the '71 model is special: "Even rarer are models from 1971 (fewer than 5000).... In 1973, Z/28 sales rose to more than 11,500, before the Camaro was significantly restyled for 1974." Some purists say that restyling marked the end of the true Z28s.
Offered here is a refreshed and tastefully upgraded 1971 Camaro Z28 in blue metallic-with-bespoke-black-stripes over black vinyl. The car's engine has been replaced with a 350 cubic-inch V8 crate-engine power married to a new automatic transmission. The odometer shows just under 33,000 miles on the original body. The car is the pride of its one owner over the past 20 years, who commissioned the upgrades.
The Z28's exterior blue paint was professionally refreshed and shows even gloss and color across the entire car. Door frames and the underside of the hood and trunk are properly painted. The car's original data tags are in place. The black stripes are properly positioned and show no fading or wear. Chrome-including on the full-width front and rear bumpers, door handles, headlight trim, and exhaust outlets-is free of obvious pitting or damage. The car's front and rear spoilers are properly mounted and contribute to the "dramatic European-design look" often cited in reviews. Lighting lenses, cabin glass, and properly located badging are all in excellent condition. Sumitomo Z-rated performance tires are mounted on gloss-black-finish 5-spoke wheels.
Inside, the black vinyl, vertically pleated upholstery is in very good condition overall, with only the driver's seat cushion showing a small tear. The dash controls are complete and show some signs of patina from use and age. The dash surface is free of damage or sun-fading. In addition to the factory instrumentation, auxiliary AutoMeter gauges for water temperature, oil pressure, and voltage have been incorporated in the upper console forward of the "grab bar" shifter for the 700 R4 automatic transmission. A Grant GT sport steering wheel is mounted. The black carpeting in the cabin, and a properly fitting black headliner are in excellent condition.
Inside the engine bay, the replacement 350 V8 with its aluminum heads sparkles with polished metal components, chrome air cleaner cover, chrome valve covers, and new aluminum radiator. The entire engine compartment is perfectly detailed with hoses properly routed. Underneath, the car's chassis shows only minor surface rust on some unprotected components, and no body-panel rust. The dual-exhaust system with crossover pipe and the 3.73 rear end and Hotchkis suspension springs stand out.
We expect and invite in-person inspection of this fully restored, well maintained '71 Z28 at our Grand Rapids, Michigan showroom. We ask only that you call or email us for an appointment in advance so that we can devote our full attention to you during your visit. Meanwhile, the more than 130 high-definition photographs of the car and the short walk-around-and-startup video on the GarageKeptMotors site faithfully represent the car's condition, but feel free to call or email with any questions.
Hagerty called these Camaros "underappreciated." In the case of the dedicated owner, custodian, and up-grader of this lovely blue '71 Z28, it's fair to say you can strike the "under" part.
