"For the first time I now have a Corvette I can be proud to drive in Europe." - Zora Arkus-Duntov
In the quote above, the "Father of the Corvette" was referring to the 1963 model, the "C2" in Corvette-speak. In its same-year review of the then-new Corvette, Car and Driver, detailed the car's most significant advancement beyond the comprehensive styling re-design: "The new all-independent suspension has completely transformed the Corvette in terms of traction and cornering power.... Cornering stability under conditions permitting minimal wheel deflections is remarkable, and an initial feeling of pleasant surprise rises to sheer astonishment when one discovers that the car can be taken off the predetermined line with ease and still complete the turn in perfect balance."
Offered here in silver-blue-metallic over ocean-blue leather, beneath a white fabric top, is a very well-maintained, unrestored, numbers-matching, largely original '63 Corvette Sting Ray Roadster. In 57 years, the car has traveled just 69,000 miles, or fewer than 1,300 miles per-year on average. Clearly, the car was loved and driven sparingly. Its condition bears this out.
The exterior paint retains factory gloss and evenness. There is no damage anywhere on the body, and body-panel alignment and fit is excellent. The rotating headlights operate as they should. All factory badging-including cross-flags on the hood and rear-deck-mounted fuel filler cap, the "Corvette Sting Ray" rear emblem, and front fender "v-with-flags"-is present, properly located, and showing only minor patina from age. In similar fashion, chrome side mirrors, windshield surround, door handles, bumpers, lower side trim, hood "louvers," and lower-front grille have all been well-maintained with only slight patina in some locations. Windshield glass is clear and unblemished. Factory, turbine-design wheel covers with faux knock-off caps are mounted with Firestone bias-ply, narrow whitewall tires.
The light-blue exterior is perfectly complemented by the dark-blue leather upholstery. The characteristic twin-cowl dash, center stack, and visors feature the same material. Light patina appropriate for the age of the car can be found on some surfaces (including the steering column, console, and some switchgear). The vertically pleated leather seats are free of rips, creases, or indeed any damage. Light-blue lap belts are mounted. The original Corvette-branded steering wheel, again with light patina, is in place. Instrument-glass is clear and indicator needles retain their color. The 160-mph speedometer, tachometer, and auxiliary gauges operate as they should. The vertically mounted factory-original AM pushbutton Delco radio is in place in the center stack (together with its four control knobs), while the four-speed shifter occupies the lower portion surrounded by metal trim bearing the shift pattern. Door trim-including the red side-warning lights and pleated-leather-is excellent.
Under the front-hinged hood, the legendary 327 cubic-inch V8 is easily identified by its Corvette-script forged valve covers. A chrome air-cleaner cover shines beautifully. All appropriate components are present and properly located in the clean and tidy engine bay. The car's undercarriage shows no damage to the dual exhaust system. Modest surface rust is present on some suspension components and un-protected metal surfaces.
We expect and invite in-person inspection of this beautiful, collectible '63 Sting Ray drop-top at our Grand Rapids, Michigan showroom. We ask only that you call or email us for an appointment in advance so that we can devote our full attention to you during your visit. Meanwhile, the more than 165 high-definition photographs of the car and the short walk-around-and-startup video on the GarageKeptMotors site faithfully represent the car's well-maintained survivor condition, but feel free to call or email with any questions.
Car and Driver again: "Compared with previous Corvettes, the (1963) Sting Ray is improved in almost every imaginable respect: performance, handling, ride comfort, habitability and trunk space." This is a rare chance to experience this historic sports car.
